Nice living in the Marina/Archstone

The Archstone Marina del Rey is a sprawling complex with lots of amenities and something for everyone. The housing consists of a 12-story tower, probably the highest point in the area, with ocean and mountain views -- and seven smaller buildings of 3-4 stories. The grounds are lushly landscaped and if your apartment is buried inside the huge complex, it is as quiet as if you lived in rural Vermont. Apartments -- especially the 1BR (mine is nearly 1,000 s.f.) -- are spacious, with walk-in closets, new carpet, dishwasher, microwave, and floor-to-ceiling windows in many rooms. Mine even has a *full-size* washer/dryer in the unit. The complex has a sparkling pool and spa (open 8 am - 10 pm), 24-hour gym, tennis courts, and a dog park on premises. There's also a business center (computers/printer), a lounge with billiards, TV and DVD rental machine, tennis courts, on-site dry cleaning pickup, and the office has free coffee and dog treats. They allow any size dog; there are several Great Danes here now. Maintenance is terrific. There are many people swarming over the place from the crack of dawn, hosing down the plaza, polishing everything, sweeping, gardening, and they're all incredibly friendly. The office staff, which receives packages and other deliveries, is also great. I have heard others complain about rent increases, but mine have been completely reasonable. The complex was gutted and fully renovated about four years ago. Although there is currently a large construction project next door, I don't hear a thing from it. Archstone is located in a great spot across from the Marina Beach. It's a 1-minute walk there, about 7 to the ocean, and 10 to the channel. There are terrific restaurants in every direction, along with several yacht clubs and a great gym right across the street. The only drawback, and it's small, is that I find the security guard, who is hired from a separate company, is a little odd.
